Bowenwork® is a system of touch that initiates a series of responses through stimulation of the nervous, musculoskeletal, fascial and energetic systems of the human body.

Practitioners perform sequences of small stimulations, called “moves” on specific points on the body, interspersed with rest periods. The Bowenwork moves stimulate mechanoreceptors (nerve endings) that overlie both muscles and acupoints. The body’s response to this stimulation, which begins during the rest periods, includes a balancing of the autonomic nervous system and changes in the musculoskeletal system in the direction of increased symmetry. These effects in turn remove blockages to the free flow of energy in the body. From the point of view of complementary health care, when the body’s nervous and energetic systems are in balance, its physical, emotional and mental functions are able to return to a healthy state.

A Bowen Session

The practitioner will perform a series of light touch, cross fiber 'moves' over specific regions of your body. Each move consists of a precise 'move' with comfortable pressure over localized regions of the body like ligaments, muscles, tendons or nerves. The practitioner may pause between moves and even leave the room, giving the body's nervous system ample time to process and integrate the input from the 'moves' in order to make changes in the connective tissue, muscle tone and the body's overall alignment.  Light weight, non-restricting clothing is recommended during a session, the practitioner can work through clothing.  If a client is unable to lie down on a table Bowenwork can be performed seated, it can also be performed for those clients that may be bed ridden.

Mind/Body Bowen

The mind/body approach to Bowenwork® specifically focuses on identifying and releasing a trauma that has been stored in the body, causing pain and dysfunction. The body's own interoception (internal awareness of sensation) and self-healing intelligence guides the pace and direction of the session to release both physical and emotional trauma that has been stored in the tissues.

Our 'bodymind' is formed from a complex interrelationship of heredity together with a myriad of considerations of our personal, emotional, mental, environmental and spiritual history. This very personal and original history or biography is held as our 'memory'.

Using Bowen as a means of processing, in a structured, safe, quiet, supportive atmosphere, helps the client, whether child or adult, connect to the sensations in the body. Touch can bring up a memory, the memory will bring up a repressed emotion, repressed emotions can often be detected under body aches and pains. What we don't let ourselves feel or express becomes stuck and causes muscular tension rather like body armour, which over the years can become chronic, even permanent.  Only when these muscular tensions finally release can a state of well-being and relaxation follow.

Bowenwork is gentle on the body, effective and appropriate for anyone to receive, including newborns, highly trained athletes, pregnant women and the elderly.
